But now, if I call them they want me to build them a bar. They have some neat idea for a bar out back or in the kitchen. I ask them what's wrong with the bar they already have. But, they always want more. They can't just have one bar. They have to have one in every room. Sound familiar?

Not Working

So, we've negotiated our fee. They get a small bar in the garage and they're on their way to help me out with a new job. I still have to buy the beer and pizza. But, at least I have some help.

There comes an occasional time when you and your contractor don't see eye to eye. Either there was a lack of communication on someone's part or, who am I kidding it's always a lack of communication. But, those types of problems can get resolved even though sometimes they have to end up in court.

But, there are scam artists out there who will rob you like a thief in the night. Sometimes, there is no course of action because you don't have enough information to nail them. You think you've asked all the important questions and have everything you need. But, the scam artist who flees town after taking your money won't leave tracks behind.

Overcharging

You think you have friends until you get a little fame in you for building home bars. That's when they all want a piece of that pie. I used to be able to buy a case of beer and offer my friends pizza for helping me build a bar. You know, the standard moving fee.

When you need a job, you might go through references and it makes a lot of sense. But, some people like to start the bidding wars and that's where they get in trouble. Bidding wars start substandard bids, which are too good to be true.

In this economy, it's easy to want a very low bid to be feasible. But, you'll get substandard work or no work done at all. Once the bid is approved and a bidder is awarded the job, they might take the advance and run. They might do poor work or use cheap materials and take short cuts. You have to be weary when it comes to substandard bids because you never know what type of mess you are going to get. Then, you have to pay someone else double to clean up the mess.

Make sure you check their licensing and make them get permits for any work they offer to do. That way you can let the system weed out those individuals who are trying to hustle you. They'll disappear on you quick. But, at least they won't disappear with your money.

Another well-calculated feat of design shows up in the way sound effects are handled. Although this volume follows the right-to-left layout of the series' 2nd edition, the translation and touch-up staff have decided to keep on converting the sound effects to pure English—and they manage to actually make it work.

High pressure sales tactics are another way to spot a scammer. In this economy, some legitimate contractors might offer some discounts or give you a great deal if you act fast. But, they will let you think about it and might give you a week or two to make a decision. A hustler wants you to make that decision right now and they use other high pressure sales tactics as well. They will make you think your house will fall apart if you don't fix the problem yesterday. Get a second opinion. That's one way to make sure you have accurate information.

Scam artists will always be around. They are like roaches. They will keep knocking on your door and coming at you for every ounce of money they can get. (And for those who have, the suspense is in seeing how Gonzo's going to handle various story threads.) It also allows the writers to condense down but still examine a very complex theme about relative vs. absolute happiness, which can be seen in the way things play out amongst Albert and his friends. Maximilian's umbrage about the lack of love amongst aristocrats, and the way it makes Albert reexamine his own views and relationships, is a big part of that.

Fortunately, this fluff-laden storyline is quickly saved by a burst from the heavens: Peorth's botched attempt to return home, followed by the resulting interference from the Gate. Now this is where the fun starts: Urd's love spell on Keiichi still hasn't worn off, and at the same the Gate is inquiring persistently about love, and by the way, Peorth still needs to get home.

Where this story goes beyond the novel is in its use of Albert, originally only a secondary character, as a framing device. By doing this the viewer's perspective is limited to only a little more than what Albert himself knows about the causes for the Count's motivations, which certainly helps maintain the level of suspense for anyone who hasn't read the novel.

As a result, we get several chapters of highly entertaining, tried-and-true Goddess material: some slapstick humor here (the Gate goes on a kissing rampage), some fancy sorcery there (the other goddesses try to pin her down with a magic circle), and even some bawdy winking and nudging when Keiichi tries to insert the "key" into the Gate's "lock." (Yes, this is exactly what it sounds like.) It also doesn't hurt that the Gate's wild, petulant personality keeps everyone on their toes.

Most of the thematic elements, characterizations, and relationships have also been preserved despite the futuristic setting; only one of the named characters here – the transvestite Peppo – was not in the original novel. Even the intimations that the Count might be a vampire were actually in the original novel, too, although they are much more pronounced here. The more you know about the original story, the more the cleverness of this writing effort shines through.

There are two major criticism of this storyline, though: firstly, as a comedy-centric arc, it lacks the weight of the epic fantasy segments or even those racing tournaments that Keiichi and his old college pals used to have. Secondly, the focus on love means we have to sit through Belldandy's sappy aphorisms, her vacuous good-girl smile, and Keiichi's wimpy attempts at affection. Anyone ever notice that the side characters are the only things that make this series interesting anymore?

One cannot watch these four episodes without getting a sense of an intricate machine gradually cranking its way towards destruction and doom as the Count makes his sly first plays against the hearts and minds of his enemies. In this the writing has done a great job of capturing the spirit and character of the original novel by Alexandre Dumas.

In fact, even Kosuke Fujishima's art seems to have taken a turn for the lackadaisical; there are times when entire dialogue sequences go by with nary a background illustration. It's a bit disappointing, because Fujishima has built his reputation on being able to sketch out stunning landscapes and dazzling displays of magic and ridiculously intricate machinery—yet the mood doesn't seem to strike him very much in this volume. Sure, some of that can be blamed on the story content, but with the Gate running around making all sorts of magical mischief, shouldn't there be more fireworks?

In the first volume of Gankutsuou, The Count of Monte Cristo laid the foundation for his grand scheme of revenge by befriending Albert de Morcerf, the son of one of the men against whom he has sworn vengeance, and using that connection to help establish himself in Paris. With the second volume we get to see the first pieces of that scheme come into play.

If the visual complexity should seem lacking, though, at least there are other features that can be counted on: the cleanliness of line, the dynamically spaced layouts (particularly in the use of vertical panels that go right down the page), and just enough screentone to balance things out between light and shadow. Of course, the attractive characters are also still a major draw for the series; the Gate is a particularly well-calculated feat of moe design.

Upholding the incredible animation standards set by the "Kenshin" OVAs that came before is no easy task, but thankfully this installment is a worthy successor. While not as long as it could have been, Kenshin and Enichi's battle has a raw beauty and power to it. This is followed in the later half by a duel between Yahiko and Kenji which understandably lacks the savage intensity of the earlier fight but is no less accomplished.

Maybe the organization of chapters has something to do with it. This volume opens with an intense cliffhanger moment, and if it's been a few months since reading the previous one, then the first few pages are going to be highly disorienting. Even after getting one's bearings, the story content in the early chapters feels too lightweight—oh look, here's Keiichi trying to be romantic with Belldandy, and here's Urd and Peorth screwing things up for him, which is exactly like 70% of the rest of the series and just as predictable.

And in a refreshing change from previous Rurouni Kenshin OVAs (and anime in general, for that matter), even the less action-oriented scenes are often fully animated, bringing the characters convincingly to life. As stated in my review of "Seisouhen Part 1", the redesign of the characters is a mixed bag, with some looking pretty good (Kenshin, Enichi) and others looking pretty awkward (Kaoru, Sanosuke).

So it comes almost as a shock that this installment actually manages to dig into some traditional romantic comedy material, carrying over from the "get Keiichi to say 'I love you'" antics of Volume 30. At the same time, it offers up some of the series' fantastical side as the Gate comes tumbling down from heaven and demands to know the meaning of love. It's some fun, lighthearted stuff—which, unfortunately, also makes it feel unsatisfyingly short.

Taku Iwasaki's score continues to amaze. While there are no standout melodies as in the first OVA series, the overall composition achieves a grand orchestral effect, lending "Seisouhen" the feeling of a big-budget Hollywood feature. Like Part 1, the incredible musical accomplishment fuses with the equally impressive visual artistry to make this new Rurouni Kenshin OVA a feast for the eyes and ears.

Despite its humble beginnings as a magic-tinged romantic comedy for guys, Oh My Goddess! has spent the last 20-odd years venturing into all sorts of genres along the way. Open up a random volume, and there's no telling what will come out: epic mythological fantasy, gentle slice-of-life drama, maybe even a gearhead's paradise of science and engineering trivia.

It is a shame the story doesn't measure up to the amazing technical merits. If the creators had devoted the entire length of this new OVA series to a more faithful and detailed telling of the manga's Revenge Arc they most certainly would have created the Ultimate Rurouni Kenshin Anime. Though I suppose it is unfair to judge this anime based on what it "might have been", there is no denying what it is, and that is jumbled, overly-melodramatic, and ultimately unnecessary. Though there are some strong points, most Kenshin fans will probably find this an unfitting conclusion to the adventures of their favorite ex-hitokiri.

In any case, Peorth's scheming is cut short when she receives an order to return to heaven. There's just one problem with that: she can't get back in! Much to Keiichi's surprise, the gate to heaven is an actual spiritual being, and she refuses to open up until she learns the meaning of "love." Luckily, it looks like she's met just the right people to explain it to her...

Most mortal men have a hard enough time saying the words "I love you"—and Keiichi Morisato's got it even harder, since he's in love with a literal goddess. But divine intervention is on Keiichi's side, with celestial beauties Urd and Peorth all too happy to help Keiichi express his feelings toward Belldandy. But maybe having them around is just making it worse.

Albert and friends continue their excursion through the extraordinary underground of the Count's Parisian estate, but Maximilian's growing affection for Valentine and his disdain for the lack of love amongst arranged aristocratic marriages leads to conflict. Meanwhile the Count's carefully calculated scheming continues as a trip to the opera stirs up all manner of attention, he moves to involve Baron Danglar's bank in his finances, and he plays up to Heloise, the toxicology-loving wife of Crown Prosecutor Eduoard de Villefort. But his boldest move yet comes at a dinner party at a morose country estate once belonging to Villefort where a little game proves anything but innocent. All the while Albert remains oblivious to the machinations into which he has become an unwitting pawn.

Not content with the "....and they lived happily ever after" that so fittingly concluded the manga, "Seisouhen" takes Kenshin's story much further than it needs to. Denying it's protagonist peace at the end of his labors, the story sees Kenshin restlessly wander Japan over the next 15 years, aiding victims of famine and plague.

But the real reason Ichiban Ushiro holds together, and onto us, is its cast of characters. Neither the harem complications, nor the naughty humor, nor the fan-service would work nearly so well (if at all) were it not for the strong, distinctive (if simple) personalities of its female cast. Akuto's robot minder Korone in particular is a fount of amusement; a cute, dead-pan delivery device for some seriously horrendous vulgarities. And the remainder of Akuto's harem, right down to the initially irritating black-magic schemer, is interesting—and possessed of their own oft-selfish reasons for taking up residence in his bordello.

This comes at the expense of Kenshin's health as well as his home life, as Kenji comes to resent his father for what he perceives as abandoning his mother. Eventually Kenji's bitterness spreads even to Kaoru; deeming her weak for passively awaiting Kenshin's brief, sporadic returns from his wanderings, the rebellious youth runs away to live with Seijuro Hiko in the hopes of learning his father's sword technique.

And then there's Akuto. The rare male lead capable of out-competing his female compatriots, he wants desperately to be a spineless do-gooder, but just can't seem to swing it. For one, his ironclad sense of justice consistently puts him in conflict with the powers-that-be, and for another, somewhere beneath all that enforced goody-two-shoes behavior and denial is a genuine, ice-cold Demon Lord. The scene in which Akuto, ambushed by a variety of thugs, retaliates by breaking their legs and forcing them to watch as he tortures their leader is a real eye-opener to say the least.

These scenes, which comprise the majority of the OVA, are related in a disjointed manner, and while the action is followable the events don't seem as fleshed out as they might have been. In any event, the promise of a happy ending provided by both the manga and the television series is dashed as it is revealed Kenshin's later years were marked by illness and a dysfunctional family. The whole thing is so horribly melodramatic it is hard to take any of it very seriously.

It's also a reminder that behind the wheel of this colorful little comedy/magical action/romance vehicle sits the guy who gave us Ikki Tousen. That is, if the exploding blouses weren't enough to tip you off. Watanabe isn't versed only in reflexive joke-making a la Slayers; he and his Artland collaborators also pull off some pretty solid action set-pieces, sprucing up fist- and sword-fights with CG magic, cogent choreography, and little jolts of incongruous brutality.

There are some genuinely moving moments, however. Most effective is an emotional scene following Sanosuke's reunion with an ailing Kenshin. The two share dinner but Kenshin is too weak to eat, and Sanosuke is overcome with grief at the shadow of a man his best friend has become. Another interesting sequence involves an unlikely conversation between Seijuro and Yahiko, of all people.

They're energetic and exciting enough that their occasional budget-friendly shortcut isn't that noticeable, and they have an eye for cool that many another action series could benefit from. The show overall is bright, energetic, and better animated than the norm, and the fan-service may hog more of the animators' time and effort, but the action—a mano-a-mano rumble with a dragon, that thug-ambush—linger longer in the mind's eye.

As a child it is doubtful Yahiko would have even been given the time of day by the distant Seijuro, but here we find two adults sharing sake and discussing the politics of swordsmanship and killing. It's a poignant and enlightening moment, and Seijuro treats Yahiko with a respect he didn't even give to Kenshin. And lastly, "Seisouhen's" final scene manages to cut through all the schmaltz for a genuinely touching (if a little depressing) ending to Rurouni Kenshin story.

There is a lot to like about Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaō. It has a clean, pleasant look, an excellent premise and a strong male lead. Fans of fan service will be in jiggle heaven, and its flashes of intelligence (the position of Demon Lord sounds suspiciously like that of a demonized revolutionary, a perfect fit for the unsuspecting Akuto) can catch even jaded anime junkies off guard. Even with its lapses into idiocy (the black-magic schemer's schemes) and habit of skirting substance in favor of harem silliness it stands as a lively, diverting slice of ecchi entertainment. It's just a shame that it doesn't try to be more.

Artistically, the characters are very well drawn, but not much attention is paid to the background, leaving many of the frames with characters that seem to be standing in empty space. All in all, this manga is mediocre at best. Although recomended for ages seven and up, the semi-nudity and bloody death scenes seem to be a little harsh for a seven-year-old. Unfortunately it's too serious for younger readers and too simple for more mature readers, in the end this manga is perhaps only recomendable for children around the ages of ten to fifteen.

Volume eight foreshadows this development briefly with a stop-over in a cute, bunny-filled world where Sakura absolutely insists on being a part of the action, but then the story takes a very long detour to a world that fills half of volume eight, all of volume nine, and another half of volume ten. Some important plot points are covered through this trek, especially involving the nature of the Dimension Witch's powers, and there are plenty of action scenes, including a series of fights between Kurogane and Syaoran. Also presented is the possibility of interference with, as well as a limit to, Mokona's dimension traveling powers, as the group gets separated during one dimension jump, landing in different places, and ultimately different times.

The action, though, is the real highlight. Fight scenes are swiftly-paced, full of motion, and thoroughly dynamic. Each main character has their own highly distinctive way of moving, which is supported by some of the best animation you'll see in any series anime. Characters move around and blend with the backgrounds quite effectively, creating a fully-integrated look which is a pleasure to watch. The only knock I could make against the series on technical merits is that the color schemes are sometimes a little too dark, but that's a minor quibble. This is, overall, one of the best technical series in recent memory.

Piffle offers a fresh, futuristic setting after all of the fantastical ones the group has been visiting lately, and a story arc chock full of all the stuff that made Card Captor Sakura great, including plenty of love for Sakura from Tomoyo, and a very kick-butt Sakura. So if you have gotten tired of the sleeping beauty role Sakura has been playing in the series so far, volume ten offers some much-needed character development in that area.

English vocal casting consists of a collection of Geneon/Pioneer regulars. They do a fine job of capturing the attitude and style of the characters, although their voices don't match terribly well with the originals. The English script does stay tight with the subtitles most of the time, but I noted at least a couple of places where meaning in a scene was changed markedly in the translation (“my whole family will have to commit suicide” is changed to “it will be the death of my whole family,” for instance). If you're generally a dub person then you will probably find the dub to your satisfaction, but this isn't a series likely to change the preferences of sub-favoring viewers.

If you picked up Tsubasa, RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE a while ago, and decided it wasn't enough like its inspiration, Card Captor Sakura, then you might want to give the tenth volume a try. While volumes eight and nine deal almost exclusively with a fantastical world populated by characters from CLAMP's debut manga, RG Veda, volume ten puts the group in a world called Piffle.

Graphic content for the series so far is pretty strong. Blood, severed body parts, and violent deaths abound, though the series never gets truly gory. A few sexually suggestive bits are peppered throughout this volume but there's no actual fan service. Language can get harsh and crude. This isn't one for the kiddies, but teenagers would probably love it.

Consistent readers of CLAMP's crossover series, Tsubasa, RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, should be familiar with the flow of the plot by the time they reach the eighth volume, and thus will know pretty much what to expect. The gang travels to a new world and is immediately thrown into some kind of problem, more than likely caused by one of Sakura's missing feathers. They put clues together, get a little bit of action, stop the bad guy if there is one, collect the feather, then move on. Volumes eight, nine, and ten offer little variety on the format; there's enough to keep long-time readers coming back for more, but really nothing to prompt new readers to pick it up, except one thing in the tenth volume.

The biggest knock that could probably be made against Samurai Champloo is that it lacks more than the barest semblance of an overall plot. The first four episodes are episodic, and while they stand alone quite well, they don't run together to create anything greater. Perhaps that is something to come in future volumes. Overall, though, this is one sharp and exciting series. It's easy to see why it has already made such an impression on the American fan community, and it should continue to do so.

After failing to recover one of Sakura's feathers for the first time, Syaoran and the gang find themselves facing more and more challenges. A mysterious world brings into question Mokona's feather-finding power; the group then finds themselves transported first to different places, then to different times! Separated from Fai and Kurogane, Sakura and Syaoran must attempt to find the feather on their own, but the search is made more difficult when Syaoran encounters none other than Fai and Kurogane on the opposite side of a battlefield.

The musical score is composed mostly of energetic hip-hop beats headed by a rapped (in English) opener and an R&B-sounding closer, while discourteous notices pepper the first episode (“This work of fiction is not an accurate historical portrayal. Like we CARE! Now shut up and enjoy the show!”). The animation gives the characters ample opportunities for interesting expressions and poses, and even the MTV-like editing furthers the overall trendiness.

Julin Kenga has always believed she was an orphan and an only child. On her fifteenth birthday she learns otherwise. The greatest beauty of Samurai Champloo is that everything about it contributes to its hipness. Characters are given crisp dialogue heavy on 'tude and ample opportunities both to display that 'tude and show off their skill. Character designs are heavily stylized, stressing thin, gangly limbs and caricaturized faces, while costuming reflects the time in which the series is set but also incorporates a certain panache.

Volume one of Shaolin Sisters is a confusing array of action and information, but the action doesn't satisfy and the information fails to answer any questions the reader may have about the characters. And for a martial arts manga, it fails to adequately address the different forms of martial arts that are presented. Each character seems only to have one forte, and the main character occasionally will have one good move, that she will just beat to death trying to use over and over again.

In fact, the setting is little more than a convenience to allow for how Mugen and Jin could be wandering the land racking up such a high body count with their swords. Their excesses do, of course, get them into trouble which, at various points, results in them being tortured, almost being executed, having to deal with assassins, and being tormented by an individual whom they harmed (but failed to kill) early on, who seeks revenge. Having to deal with Fuu could be considered another kind of punishment, but her presence does at least somewhat curtail their lethal tendencies.

It doesn't take long to get sick of Julin and her naïveté. The manga-ka attempts to incorporate drama and humor, but fails to do a very good job of meshing the two. The drama throughout most of the manga seems to be superficial and the use of a super tiny bunny who carries around a first aid kit is just out of place.

All of the gut-kicking, face-crunching, and head-bashing is kind of cool in its own way, but that shouldn't be misconstrued as ascribing any seriousness to it. The violence has all the dramatic tension of a Tom and Jerry scuffle and shares the exact same purpose. Ramen Fighter Miki is all about mindless, bracingly mean-spirited fun, obliterating all thought the way only the broadest slapstick can. That it doesn't make you feel like a lumbering simpleton for enjoying it is just icing on the cake.

Mugen is a wild, womanizing warrior who believes absolutely in doing his own thing; he is no one's servant or slave and does whatever he wants, and if that happens to mean killing thugs who get in his way, so be it! Jin is a vagrant ronin—formally trained, well-mannered, and highly-skilled, yet just as fiercely independent as Mugen. The two take an instant dislike to each other and set about repeatedly trying to kill each other, efforts interrupted only by running afoul of a local lord. When a ditzy barmaid named Fuu helps rescue them from being executed, they reluctantly agree to set aside their mutual animosity until they have helped her in her quest to find a “samurai who smells of sunflowers.” That is, if they don't ditch her first. . .

Other than the hard and fast opening theme and its thoroughly misrepresentative visuals, Miki's music keeps quiet and to the back, supporting the jokes and moods (all two of them) of the show, never overextending itself or growing the least bit noticeable. When it isn't invisible, it's relaxed—effective and forgettable.

If you've ever asked yourself, “gee, I wonder what a hip-hop samurai anime would look like?” then Samurai Champloo is your answer. This gleefully irreverent action series goes all-out to be the hippest and baddest anime title of them all. But what else would one expect from Shinichiro Watanabe, the creative whiz responsible for Cowboy Bebop? The sensibilities of the latter clearly permeate this series, especially in the way the action scenes are staged. Though ostensibly set in the Meiji era (the period in the late 19th century when Japan was modernizing and the old ways of the samurai were being set aside), the series tells you up front that it's making no effort to be historically accurate.

Once the series casts its unsettling spell, however, such quibbles cease to matter. Not everyone will succumb to its chilly magic, and some adjustment of expectations may be necessary (flee hopes of excitement! flee far, far away), but adjust and succumb and you will find a series that owes far more to Val Lewton's horror of suggestion than to the apocalyptic action of Hellsing or the gothic melodrama of Vampire Knight and can stand tall in their company for that very reason. Maybe not too tall, but still.

Miki's life has settled into a comfortable routine: beat up Kankuro for challenging her, beat up Megumi for being sneaky or for no reason at all, beat up the local pitbull because he's super-strong, and then get beat up by her mom. Any excuse for a fight will do. Megumi posting slanderous truths? Fight! Want a stuffed piggy that someone is buying? Fight! Kankuro in the vicinity being loud? Fight! Stuck in a hole closed off on all sides by buildings? Fight! Playing Star Rangers with the local kiddies?

Shiki's approach to horror isn't without its unfavorable repercussions. It has little fondness for its cast—most of whom die anyway—and its glacial pace can be infuriating, particularly when the villagers slooooowly fumble through their investigation. When people are dying of blood loss and there's a medieval castle full of hollow-eyed nocturnals on your hill, some of whom trawl the streets at night trying to get invited into your homes, maybe—and I'm going out on a limb here—maybe you have a vampire problem.

Fight! Going to a hospital to support a little boy preparing for surgery? Fight! Nothing solves problems such as an unhealthy obsession with voluptuous television villains or misguided romantic advisors (Kankuro+Miki?) like a combination of well-intentioned meddling and blunt-force trauma. And who better to deliver it than the Onimaru Restaurant's resident poster girl/martial-arts monster?

While on the subject of atmosphere, Yasuharu Takanashi's score warrants a special mention. Takanashi is the guy who laced Hell Girl with delicate audio damnation, and he does Shiki a similar service. His music doesn't support the show so much as haunt it, fomenting disquiet in the night and drifting eerily through sunny fields, the wordless dissonance of its beautiful vocals bubbling to the surface whenever the supernatural brushes against the everyday. A better fit for the series is hard to imagine.

Depending solely on humor can be dangerous; Miki only succeeds largely by being one of the most consistently funny series in some time. It doesn't reach the heights of hilarity that more inconsistent series like Galaxy Angel occasionally do, but neither does it share their sometimes stunning comic failures—amusement levels vary from episode to episode, but not drastically. Though many of the gags are repetitive, playing on recurring jokes like Akihiko's role as collateral damage (he is pummeled, stabbed and poisoned throughout the volume) and Ms.

A girl's deathbed remembrance of her assault passes in a disorienting smear of distorted imagery, the castle-dwellers arrive in a moving truck that seems to glower and scream, and that first unequivocal vampire haunts her intended victim in a series of intrusive and increasingly disturbing nightmares. These bursts of extreme stylization can seem a little messy and pointless at first, but their cumulative effect—in putting viewers on edge and heightening the vampires' indefinable menace—reveals them to be anything but.

Kayahara's evil eye, the series doesn't make the mistake of allowing itself to stagnate. Some comic situations are built around new and novel combinations of characters, as when Kankuro and Toshiyuki the pitbull try to carry on a life-or-death battle behind the back of innocent little Wakana, while others build on the characters' lives, as when Megumi's infiltration of the Onimaru "demon's den" reveals the real reason that the restaurant does so well. Sight gags are sprinkled liberally throughout (Akihiko's evil conscience dresses in a cabaret bunny-girl costume) and parodies are used sparingly, the series preferring to invent its own comedy rather than borrow from others.

As you'd expect of a series intent on evoking hidden horrors and ratcheting up incremental suspense, Shiki is heavily atmosphere-focused. It moves in a haze of curdled bucolic peace, never hurrying and rarely breaching the unnatural stillness that envelops the doomed village. When the stillness is breached, however, it is with hallucinatory ferocity.

With all the laughing it's easy to overlook another of the series' strengths: the fights. Their intent is definitely comical. Miki's cackling, fanged glee during mortal combat is a recurrent joke, and her ability to escalate any situation into a bare-knuckle brawl provides the volume with many of its most hilarious moments. Who but Miki could transform an argument over a PIGGY doll into an epic battle or turn a trapped-in-a-hole scenario into a battle royale with the sole purpose of stacking up enough bodies to reach the hole's only exit? And yet the martial-arts sparring is surprisingly exciting. Like the rest of the show, the fighting spurns outright fantasy (though it revels in massive exaggeration); the fights are all bone-crunching fist-to-fist violence, choreographed with care unusual in a comedy and animated with enough skill to actually be cool.

Dead Leaves whirls through the time spent in the moon prison, attempting to chronicle a mass escape along the lines of so many Hollywood movies before it. We of course must also deal with the omnipresent questions of Who Are These People, why did they lose their memories, and how, exactly, did they manage to have sex through a pair of straightjackets? The difference between Dead Leaves and Hollywood is that Imaishi's creation does not particularly care for the answers.

When a few outlying citizens start dying in the isolated backwater of Sotoba no one really pays it much mind. Sotoba's population is pretty elderly, and it is summer, so a few deaths are to be expected. A more interesting topic of conversation is the odd family that has moved into the European-styled castle on the hill above town. But when a local teen is struck down in her prime, the town begins to take note.

It is instead primarily concerned with providing a wonderful sense of destruction; the vast majority of the cast, both good and bad, is constructed with a palpable sense of insanity, determined to scream and explode and bleed with an awareness of our enjoyment. Retro and Pandy themselves are death merchants, if nothing else. The entire production is frantically paced to serve this end, almost to the point where we are asked to derive some meaning from the action, watching as the manic cast endlessly swirls it's way around the winding corridors of the prison complex on trains and motorcylces battling faceless cops or super crab robots or…well, just about anything. It's quite the ride.

Especially local doctor Toshio Ozaki, who sees a pattern—light anemia followed by sudden and inexplicable death—in the rash of local deaths and suspects an epidemic. And like an epidemic, it spreads, killing young and old alike in ever-increasing numbers. But something doesn't add up. Why, prior to dying, do the victims quit their jobs? And what of the other villagers who simply disappear—ferried off in the night by moving vans? And what about the sightings of the dead, stalking the village at night?

The idea of a show this flimsy and schizophrenic is to rely on style and lavish visuals. Things must catch our eye, or we're going to stop paying attention Luckily, director Imaishi previously worked as animation director for FLCL--and it shows. The animation is smooth and frantic, stylistically jumping back and forth between what is appropriate for the moment, almost like an American cartoon. Action is over the top, much like what you'd find in the last two episodes of FLCL.

Just when you think there's nowhere new for anime to take the vampire tale, along comes this alternately calculating and hallucinogenic adaptation of Fuyumi Ono and Ryu Fujisaki's horror manga. Viewing the undead through the eyes of a besieged village, Shiki manages the impossible: to give vampires back the menace and mystery they lost somewhere in the transition from Nosferatu to Twilight. Screw humanized vampires, Shiki is here to reclaim them for the monsters.

Unlike FLCL's use of pastels and round-ish designs, however, Dead Leaves is dark and angular, with the occasional use of solid greens and blues lending immediacy to the action. The characters are all wildly expressive, mostly with either glee or terror. I found myself constantly reminded of MTV's old Liquid Television shorts (Aeon Flux and such), themselves often composed of equal parts vulgarity and imagination. Even the voice work done in the dub is reminiscent of what is typically found in American animation. Pandy's monotone voice manages to reveal personality in the few scenes where she genuinely feels some sort of emotion, while nearly everyone else sounds as if they've stumbled out of a mental ward. This lunacy flows well with the action on screen, and adds that final bit of edge to the production.

Of course if you want humanized vampires—or action-hero vampires, or glittery romantic vampires—then Shiki will be a bitter disappointment. No one actually sees a vampire until episode four, much less fights one or bears its babies. Shiki's vampires are a silent plague: deadly and indiscriminate but also invisible. For the show's first leg there's nothing more than a series of unexplained deaths and a mounting sense of unease to suggest their existence—well, that and an empty-eyed family that lives in a medieval castle.

It's just, well--there's not that much else. Dead Leaves' edge isn't as avant garde as Liquid TV, nor is it a work of unadulterated genius like FLCL. Get past the visuals and the mood, and you won't be left with a whole lot. It tries, oh does it ever, with Pandy, to establish something interesting. It tries to smash some meaning into these fifty minutes. It knows how to do it. Imaishi is a man that understands pacing. He gets how to weave a small bit of plot into a work of this nature. How to worm it deep into the consciousness of the destruction and chaos, and let it feed on the outlying quality, and grow, like a seed, ready to burst forth at some exact moment in the form of an epiphany. He tries real hard.

Only as the villagers stumble, one cryptic clue at a time, towards the truth do the undead reveal something of themselves, and then only in fleeting and incomplete flashes. It's an old tactic (think of it as the narrative equivalent of Ridley Scott's fractured shooting of the Alien) but an effective one. By the time the first vampire reveals herself, she's already eerily alien...and hair-raisingly creepy.

There's still plenty here that's dull, and just as much that is patently ridiculous (of which the Claw's technobabble-based Birthday System takes the cake). Like precious jewels embedded in a firmament of dullest concrete, GUNxSWORD's exceptional moments, more so than lending luster to their surroundings, make one want to pluck them out and mount them in an artwork befitting their beauty. Here in the final volume though, they're close enough together and bright enough to make one a little more inclined to leave them where they lay. Not great by any stretch, but often pretty darned good.

Dead Leaves is one long run-on sentence. That's the best way to describe it. It starts and ends, breathless, having never learned of restraint or structure, as eager to finish as it is to begin. If you think run-on sentences are cool, you will like it. If you don't, well, you might like it anyway, but the chances have just gone down considerably. If you can appreciate people like that—admire their gusto, then chances are Dead Leaves will not anger you. If you are that person, then you might as well call up director Hiroyuki Imaishi. You'd get along great.

This volume contains the 13th (and final) installment of the CGI puppet omake Gun Sword-san which, it must be said, is much funnier in English. Also included is a collection of four more clean versions of the ever-changing opening, and a few pieces of promotional artwork. Most interesting of all is an unusual curiosity: the custom-order GUNxSWORD trailer that David Vincent used to propose to his girlfriend.

It is like that excitable friend we all have—the one that calls you up late at night after he/she gets home from work and just starts talking and talking and talking, spilling everything about the day at hand, or what video game they are playing, or why they should be studying for that test tomorrow instead of talking to you, but they go on and on anyway just because they can, just because they might say something interesting, just because they aren't really sure what might come out, or why, and, hey, doing is the only way of finding out, right? It's like that.

Artwork aside, Hot Gimmick is a strong series and Viz was smart in adding this to their “Shoujo Manga” line. By combining real life situations – class struggles and attempted rape, with slightly less than believable situations – my boyfriend is a supermodel, Hot Gimmick reads like a “teens guide to life” in manga format. If you're looking for something to satisfy that angst appetite, Hot Gimmick may be just what your palate is looking for.

Dead Leaves is very crude, you see. It is senselessly violent. It dwells on bodily functions. One of its more important secondary characters has a drill for a penis, and uses it liberally. The two main characters, Retro and Pandy, have violent sex with one another on a complete whim. Skulls are crushed. About eight million bullets are fired. The first cop dies fifteen seconds in, and I'm still not really sure why. So lets back up.

Miki Aihara's artwork isn't ugly, just very generic. The “extra” at the back of the book is a nice addition, though. In it are some detailed descriptions of the Narita family members as well as a small guide to the housing complex layout. Aihara also includes a "Neighborhood Tour" which showcases some of the neighborhoods she has lived in. The "tour" even informs us that the housing complex in Hot Gimmick was modeled on an actual housing complex in Setagaya.

Dead Leaves is about two people. One of them is Retro, a guy with a TV for a head, and a lot of energy of all types. The other is Pandy, an even-keel, chic death-maiden that might come off as a nihilist were you to sit her down over a cup of coffee. The show opens as these two wake up on the outskirts of a futuristic city, naked, with no memory. All we know is that they are comfortable with both each other and the situation, immediately acting as it nothing had happened.

With such an intricately woven story, Hot Gimmick contains seemingly empty artwork. The only depth that characters seem to possess is in their personalities, and even those don't go very far. The overly large eyes seem lifeless and alien-like, and the faces seem to possess strange, skeleton-like noses. Backgrounds are bland and almost non-existent, save for an occasional park setting or building.

They decide it might be a good idea to find some clothes in one frame, and then are wearing said clothes in the next. They steal a car, kill the driver, and find themselves in a high-speed chase/gunfight with what seems to be the entire police force of the planet earth (if earth is even where they are). They are eventually captured, sentenced, and shipped off to a maximum-security prison on what's left of the moon. All of this happens in about three minutes, before we even see the title screen. Yes, this pace is held for the next fifty minutes. Buckle up.

ADR director Liam O'Brien's dub is the same impressive work that it has always been, with David Vincent's Van leading a cast that knows how to translate roles over while placing their own distinctive stamp on them. Kudos go to Kirk Thornton for the almost frightening aplomb with which he nails the Claw's mix of civility and sociopathic lack of empathy. Overall, a work that all but the strictest of dub abstainers owes at least a try.

The poster child of perfection, Azusa has recently moved back to the housing complex and resides on the seventh floor. Childhood acquaintance of both Ryoki and Hatsumi, Azusa's appearance in the story is somewhat awkward and it almost seems like he appeared merely to serve as the third point for Hot Gimmick's bizarre love triangle. Perfection has a way of making a character seem uncomfortably suspicious and Azusa definitely exudes suspicion.

The music is more forceful than necessary, but makes up for it by breaking out the very best of the series' musical themes—Hitomi's delicate arias, the spaghetti western opener, a goodly measure of chanting and grunting—and by manipulating the sound design in inventive ways; matching rhythms of dialogue with the editing and choreographing a scene of devastation to the careless humming of the Claw.

Whether it's his doting affections towards Hatsumi, or his knack for being in the right place at the right time, Azusa seems a little too perfect for Hatsumi. Blissfully unaware of any ulterior motive, Hatsumi proceeds to fall head over heels in love with Azusa and the two begin dating. Their relationship would be all flowers and butterflies if it weren't for the nagging “enslavement to Ryoki” issue.

The digital effects used for the Prison Planet Destroyer system are unconvincing, as are a few of the powers manifested during Dann's fights, but the sharp editing during the fight scenes, along with their confluence of music, sound, and visual impact, makes it less noticeable. The willingness to put ugly, mobile expressions on Takahiro Kimura's unconventionally attractive character designs effectively supports the emotional content—the look of demonic joy on Van's face while swinging at the Claw is as chilling as it is excessive.

First and foremost a slave to her master, Hatsumi is at the mercy of whatever Ryoki wants her to do. Perhaps the most evident example of Ryoki's control over Hatsumi is when he orders her to come up to his apartment. Upon her arrival, Ryoki proceeds to all but rape Hatusmi. However, observing that things are not proceeding as planned, Ryoki refers to his "step-by-step manual" to understand why Hatsumi appears to be resisting his advances. Though the situation is very serious and altogether distasteful, one can't help but almost feel sorry for Ryoki.

The series is still a thing of technical beauty, though the animation coffers seem to be running a bit short here at the end. Backgrounds are delicate wonders, beautiful to behold and more interactive than average. The organic mecha designs for the Original 7's mecha are a treat, while Eldora Soul will strike a chord for anyone who loves things like Gaogaigar.

Not only does he come across as a complete jerk, but he manages to come across as a pathetic jerk. Frustrated that his manual doesn't give an explanation for Hatsumi's resistance, Ryoki tries to force himself on Hatsumi again, but his attempts are foiled when his “tutor” walks in on them. Despite Ryoki's obvious faults, those who initially turned a cold shoulder to Ryoki in the beginning may find themselves warming up to him by the end of the novel. In fact, after “stealing” a kiss from Hatsumi, Ryoki's cold exterior melts just a bit and allows us to see that he may have some unexpressed feelings for her.

Unfortunately, the twists put on the usual "hero saves the world" narrative are far less interesting than they had first appeared. It's all well and good to have hatred save the world, but exactly what the show is trying to say by doing so is never entirely clear. And the contrast between the "bad guy" motives of the good guys and the "good guy" motives of the bad guys is something that script writer Hideyuki Kurata did with more conviction and finesse in his brilliant conclusion to R.O.D -The TV-.

Readers would be completely overwhelmed by the Hatsumi-Ryoki-Azusa drama if it weren't for the characters Subaru, Akane, and Shinogu. Holding perhaps the most unlucky of roles is Hatsumi's best friend, Subaru Yagi. Resident “manga addicted otaku dweeb” and Gundam fanatic, Subaru is not only best friends with Hatsumi, but is also a friend of Ryoki's. Though his relationship with his Gundam model comes up more than his relationship with Ryoki and Hatsumi, one can only assume that being in the position he's in, Subaru will eventually have to make some sort of “loyalty” decision.

Yet The Mercenaries 3D has its place. There's no extensive preamble about kidnapped Presidential daughters or bizarre incidents. Players are dropped into an area swarming with brain-starved zombies and tasked with killing the local boss or simply slaying as many undead as possible. The game features only 30 such missions in eight locales, though there's co-op play and a lineup of familiar characters: Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Rebecca Chambers, Barry Burton, Claire Redfield, Albert Wesker, future Resident Evil 4 boss Jack Krauser, and masked Umbrella security solider Hunk. The giant block of Tofu from Resident Evil 2 is apparently not invited this time. But there's the option to fire while you're moving, going against the Resident Evil standard. And that's better than a block of processed, knife-wielding soy.

Flag marks the Animation Production debut for Ansa Studio, which has previously only done some in-between work but fully collaborates with the much better-known Aniplex on this project. Drawn snapshots, sometimes patterned off of real photos, mix with actual live-action photographs, animation still shots, generally brief fully-animated clips, and computer screen displays to create a unique visual look. All of the camera shots have a slightly grainy texture to them not evident in the closing visuals, perhaps as a deliberate effort to heighten the impression of looking through a camera, and those pictures taken in adverse lighting conditions reflect that in the toning and coloration.

This isn't the upcoming Resident Evil game set during the zombie-stuffed final days of Raccoon City—that's Operation Raccoon City. And it isn't the one that's all about Jill Valentine's adventure in between Resident Evil 4 and 5—that's Resident Evil Revelations. No, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is a 3DS revamp of the Mercenaries modes from previous Resident Evils, which makes it the least interesting of the franchise's upcoming harvest.

Military equipment purely gets CG treatment, while character designs, which occasionally exaggerate features but usually favor a more realistic look, are drawn in the traditional manner. Diverse background artistry provides lots of detailed and pretty or earthy settings, and what animation there is pays particular attention to detailed renditions of characters talking, but the true visual highlight is unquestionably the Flag photo at the center of the series, which shows the silhouette of praying figures through a blue Flag being flown by celebrating soldiers and Uddayids. Given the emphasis placed on the impact this photo makes in the story, the series' greatest triumph may be convincing the viewer that the Flag photo does, in fact, warrant the attention it gets.

The musical score takes a minimalist approach, allowing most scenes to pass without any musical backing. When present, it uses understated themes with vaguely Asian tones reminiscent of musical selections from some of the slower moments in Ghost in the Shell, and invariably uses them effectively. The uncredited (in English) opener starts slow before swelling into a powerhouse number juiced up with wordless vocals, while the closer “Lights” starts slow and melodic before infusing in a disco-influenced dance beat. Special kudos also go to the incredibly realistic use of sound effects, especially in military vehicle operations and ammunition fire. Few audio tricks convey a sense of danger more effectively than the convincing sound of bullets zipping by.

Conveniently, you can rent episodes of Gundam Unicorn on the PLAYSTATION Network when you're not playing Dynasty Warriors Gundam! It's like those Saturday mornings where you'd go from watching Captain N cartoons to playing Mega Man or Castlevania.

Bang Zoom! Entertainment provides the English dub for this one, with Taylor Henry called upon for the dialog-intensive role of Keiichi and Dorothy Fahn inexplicably using her more raspy voice for the occasional line Saeko actually gets to voice. Other supporting characters don't always sound like you might expect in English given their designs, but nothing is wrong with their performances. Since so much of the dialog comes in the form of narration, the script usually stays very tight to the subtitles, although occasional significant discrepancies (sometimes in the dub's favor, such as one case where the subtitles incorrectly use “full moon” instead of “new moon”) do crop up. The translation does play some games with U.N. vs. U.N.F. designations, but does not remain consistent at it.

The rosters from past Dynasty Warriors: Gundam games are preserved here, and the latest additions include the Physalis and the Full Vernian Zephyranthes from Gundam 0083; the Gedlav from V Gundam; the Double X from the largely ignored Gundam X, the Death Army from the still-underrepresented G-Gundam, the Deathscythe Hell, the Heavy Arms, and the Tallgeese from Gundam Wing; the Kapool from the well-meaning mess that is Turn A Gundam; the Knight Gundam from SD Gundam Gaiden Sieg Zion Hen; the Acguy from the original Mobile Suit Gundam; the GINN from Gundam Seed; and the Raiser, the Susanowo, the Arios, the Cherudim, the Seravee, and the oddly named Reborns from Gundam 00.

The only Extra available on the regular version is a clean opener, though it does retain the original Japanese opening and closing credits. An art box is also available.

Flag is a mature, thought-provoking series aimed squarely at adults. Those looking for light, spectacularly colorful, or action-packed, entertainment should definitely look elsewhere, although you might find yourself sucked in if you give this one a try. If you are jaded by all the cookie-cutter series out there, and want something utterly different, this one is certainly worth a look.

Because of its documentary-style approach, characters who would normally be the central figures instead function mostly as observers. Saeko and Keiichi only rarely appear in a shot or directly participate in events, so attention always remains on who and what they photograph rather than on them. In Saeko's case that includes a reasonable cross-section of military-minded personalities devoid of the extremist personas typical of normal mecha-using series. Sometimes they talk directly to the camera, while other times the camera merely eavesdrops. Keiichi deals with fewer different people but does all the narration, usually speaking from his own perspective but sometimes commenting on what Saeko thinks and feels.

But Arcade Edition has a lot for those devoted to tournaments and other competitive hobnobbery. The upgrade adjusts the character balance in countless ways, setting a few new priorities, fixing some exploitable openings, and basically forcing just about every player to tweak strategies for his or her favorite character. That's how Arcade Edition truly sells itself to the Street Fighter faithful. There's also a full version of the game shipping next week, which likely won't interest anyone but PC owners, who went without Super Street Fighter IV. As for me, I'm just buying the Arcade Edition upgrade so I can do that one move where Yang rolls across the floor and then kicks the other guy into the air and it's totally awesome.

While this may sound like a choppy method for telling a story, it actually works incredibly well. Events flow along smoothly as the camera concentrates only on selected moments and relies on context and narration to link them together. Even mundane scenes like jogging and walking through a cafeteria get included, so viewers never feel like they are missing anything. Scenes like the perspective flipping around suddenly when the camera's user gets knocked down contribute to the occasional feeling of watching a documentary, albeit an animated one that includes mild mecha elements.

So it makes a certain cosmic sense whenever Wizardry comes home, clad in the finery of Japan's game industry.

The content sets the series apart far less than its approach, however. Most of this volume alternates between a secret forward military base and the streets of Subasci, but wherever its focus lies, that focus is always seen through the lens of a camera, usually one wielded by either Saeko or Keiichi. Thus the story gets told through a series of narrated photos, first-person-perspective video snippets, automated mission recordings, and examinations of computer files, with clicks of camera shutters, selections on a computer screen, and fades to static used to transition between scenes; the shift to the closer is even marked by a computer powering down.

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls makes a few concessions to modern RPG trends: the characters, all crafted either by players or at random, have stylish looks that evoke anime design without being cheap about it (though the female dwarves unfortunately resemble ten-year-old girls). That's all surface polish, of course, as this is a Wizardry game through and through. Story's kept to a minimum as players recruit a party, plow through complex labyrinths, encounter all manner of creatures, gain levels, and…well, die a lot. Such are the rules of the dungeon hack, and Wizardry insists on careful strategies and level-building. Fans of modern RPGs will wonder where the theatrical summon spells and fully voiced cutscenes are, but Wizardry has much to offer anyone who's been through dungeon rides like Etrian Odyssey and emerged wanting more.

Such are the ideas which form the essence of Flag, a mature, politically charged series which strongly echoes real-world events in Iraq and Afghanistan while also taking one of the most dramatically different artistic and storytelling approaches of any anime series in recent memory. It resembles nothing else in current circulation in spinning the stories of two photographers forced by circumstances to approach the same issue – the prospects for peace in Uddiyana – from entirely different angles.

OK, so the game's U.S. release probably has less to do with a bygone era and more to do with the simple, financially reliable appeal of cutting through hundreds of enemy soldiers in a single round. It works in untold installments of Dynasty Warriors, and it works when those soldiers are replaced with apparently auto-piloted enemy mecha from the Gundam world. The third Gundam off-shoot has the same massive battlefield melees, with new touches in the gameplay: emergency dashes and chain attacks are minor improvements, but players can also bring a companion robot into battle and call upon its pilot for special moves. KOEI mentions over 300 missions of varying objective in the game, plus an online mode that allows four-payer cooperative combat.
